Choosing Art for your Home
Choosing the right art can give your home a unique personalised touch that reflects you and your life.
Art can transform a room from simply functional to an inspiring space that tells a story.
But with so many options available, it can feel overwhelming to choose art for your home - and you also might consider if your pieces are for decoration, or maybe for an investment.
Personally I love many types of art, and over the years have enjoyed becoming a collector (very small time collector!!) of some interesting pieces - there is no particular genre I am drawn to - but 2 pieces I particularly love which I am happy to share are 2 that I bought some years ago at auction.
Theses 2 paintings are both representative of the "Bush Medicine Leaves" paintings made famous by the Indigenous women of Central Australia.
"In painting the Bush Medicine Leaf story, the artists of Central Australia pay homage to the spirit of the medicinal plant. By creating its image, the artists encourage the regeneration of the bush medicine plant, so that her people can continue to benefit from its healing powers."
I particularly love the freshness and simplicity of the red canvas with the white leaves, which almost seem to move and flow the more you look at it.
The blue version shows the technique of using a series of colours to showcase the stories from their culture and dreamtime.
The concept of healing an individual through the natural environment – using bush medicine – was ultimately entwined with the spiritual world and not just the physical. A healer was not just a 'bush clinician', but also an expert medium operating between the sick and the spiritual world. For more information on bush medicine and bush medicine art, you can read more here.
My love of theses paintings stems from my great respect for these women artists, and the beauty of their creations - I also love that they suit so many different types of interior styles.
If you are considering art for your home - my advice is to choose things which give you joy, and have meaning - this may be as simple as a canvas print for a children's room, or a beautiful photograph or landscape to trigger a memory, or something unusual bought on your travels.
There is no right or wrong when it comes to choosing artwork for your home, mix the styles and mediums, and create rooms which make your life happier and richer.
