Elegance is timeless, so how do you make your home a place that you won't have to redecorate every few years when styles change? Of course you want to celebrate your individuality, and of course you love what you love and your rooms should represent that, but these simple tips will help you create a home that withstands fads.
1. Scale
We've listed this first because it is probably the most important thing to get right. The size of furniture and rugs, and even the use of paint and wallpaper, all contribute to feel of a room. A small room can be made to feel much larger when the size of the furniture is appropriate for the space. Similarly, a large room can be made to feel cosy. This does not mean that you furnish a small room with small furniture and a small rug. Au contraire, often larger pieces in a smaller room will have the desired effect.

2. The wrong size window furnishings
In most instances short curtains are not the best choice. Although there may be practical reasons for a shorter window covering, in these instances a blind or shutter may be more appropriate. Curtains, almost always, look better at full length. Seek advice on this if you are unsure.
3. Lighting Design
Whether you are a fan of overhead lighting or lamps, the placement of your lights, and the colour of your bulbs, has a huge impact on a space. Take your room from clinical to a warm by selecting the right lights and putting them in the right places.
4. Too much matching furniture
This can be overkill. Keep your room interesting by using complementary pieces of furniture and not matching sets. This, more eclectic, approach also shows that you have collected these pieces over time, rather than furnishing your home with one visit to Harvey Norman.

5. Embrace the eclectic
As a continuation of the above point, a timeless room often looks like it has been created over a period of time. Adding some antique or vintage pieces of furniture with more modern items can create an atmosphere of cohesion when the layout is good and the colours work together.
6. Art
nothing is more of an expression of ourselves than our choice of art and it's so important to choose the right pieces. Â Art inspires, but it also transforms a space. Whether you like large pieces or a series of vignettes on one wall, planning their placement and looking at how they coordinate within the environment is key.
7. Accessories
Like a good scarf can elevate your look, your room's accessories can tie your whole design together. Cushions, throws, a basket next to a fireplace, a bedside trinket box - these sorts of extras can take a room from drab to fab.
